Utah child custody law takes effect

When parents separate, they sometimes face a variety of hurdles, from emotional courtroom disputes to dividing their property. For some parents in Salt Lake City, Utah, fighting for the custody of their child can be particularly challenging. Whenever a couple finds themselves in this position, it is essential for them to remain committed to securing an outcome which is in the best interests of the child. A custody dispute can be incredibly difficult for children and parents should do everything in their ability to work towards a favorable outcome.

In Utah, a child custody law recently took effect which will encourage courts to award custody rights to both parents after they separate. While courts have traditionally given preference to mothers when determining child custody, some have been pushing for fathers to be able to spend more time with their children after a divorce.

Because of the bill, noncustodial parents may be able to spend more time with their children. The new law encourages courts to increase the number of days per year that noncustodial parents can be with their child from 110 to no less than 145. Known as shared parenting legislation, similar laws are being reviewed in other states as well.

When two married parents decide to divorce, they may have to deal with a number of legal matters involving their children. For example, parents may fight for their visitation rights or seek sole custody. Navigating the legal system can be challenging for some parents who are dealing with these types of child custody issues. However, there are different ways parents can make their experience easier, such as preparing for their case properly and contacting an experienced legal professional.
