Facebook posts lead to arrest for failure to pay child support
When two people create a child together, they are responsible for the care, education, and medical needs of that child. However many people in Salt Lake City struggle because they are single parents and the other parent has failed to provide child support. This can put these children at a distinct disadvantage in multiple ways. With only one parent paying the bills, it is likely that the parent works full-time, depriving the child of the nurture and care that only a parent can really give.
In order to try and catch parents who have ignored the financial needs of their child, one county is using social media and the strategy is working. As a result of their efforts, a father has been caught posting pictures on Facebook that infer he is more than able to provide financial support. In the pictures, the man is holding a fan-shaped display of cash and appears to be enjoying life with a bottle of liquor.
The mother of his two-year-old child, however, is likely struggling to pay the bills every month since she has never received a dime from him. The photos are being used as evidence against the man, who has been charged with more than one felony for failure to pay child support.
As more county and state investigators begin tapping into the information that social media provides, more parents who are trying to skip out on their responsibility are likely to be held accountable for their choices. Single parents in Salt Lake City that are trying to take care of their child without financial support from the other parent may want to consult with an attorney about their rights.
