Discipline
If your child has been suspended or expelled from a Utah public school, you have rights. Even if your child is in trouble, schools must 1) provide students with notice that tells you what rule was broken, 2) provide an opportunity for your child to tell his or her side of the story, 3) and make sure the punishment fits the behavior. If you want to challenge a punishment, you must request a hearing or informal conference in writing right away or you will lose your chance! And if your child has already been expelled or suspended for a long time, you have a right to ask the superintendent to let you back in school by filing a Petition for Readmission. Special Education
If your child is failing classes, or has a hard time understanding or concentrating at school, or just can’t help getting in trouble again and again at school, struggles with homework and in-class math, reading or writing assignments, or just feels overwhelmed or depressed about school, he or she may be eligible for a little extra help and extra attention from the staff and administration at school. Special education is not just for severe or permanent disabilities. Kids today may experience high levels of stress and trauma at school, home, or with friends, which may impair their ability to succeed in school. It’s not about being disabled or being dumb, it’s about getting the assistance they deserve at school. If your child is struggling at school, we can help.
